COLUMBIA, S.C. — Drivers on a well-traveled stretch of interstate highway in Columbia may find their exit closed on Sunday night and early Monday morning as crews work in the area.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation said crews would temporarily close the I-126 ramps at Colonial Life Boulevard from 9 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday if the weather allows.

Authorities said crews will pave the Colonial Life Boulevard interchange while the exits are closed. Signs will direct drivers, and they will be detoured to Greystone Boulevard at the Riverbanks Zoo interchange of I-126.

Drivers are urged to plan for temporary slowdowns and stops and drive carefully.

Officials said another detour will be in place on July 9 as SCDOT crews deliver concrete to build the deck of the new Colonial Life Boulevard bridge over I-126. That detour will begin just after midnight on Tuesday and impact the existing flyover ramp until 6 a.m.

SCDOT said drivers traveling west on I-126 to I-26 eastbound will be directed onto Exit 107A toward I-20 westbound. The agency said that, within the interchange loop, drivers would stay to the right and then merge onto I-26 eastbound toward Charleston.

Officials said a message board would be in place for drivers before the Colonial Life Boulevard exit and would remain throughout the detour. As with the previous detour, drivers should use extreme caution.

The interstate construction work is part of the ongoing Carolina Crossroads Project, which is heavily focused on interstate traffic flows in the area.
