Traffic moving again on I-26 after fiery crash involving multiple vehicles

Traffic heading toward Columbia was held at a standstill for hours as emergency crews responded to the scene and others worked to clean up the aftermath.

NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — Traffic is moving again on I-26 after a fiery crash shut down eastbound lanes for an extended period of time on Friday.

The Newberry County Sheriff's Office said the crash happened near mile marker 89 and involved two vehicles that were on fire. Photos shared by the Little Mountain Fire Department appeared to show at least one additional vehicle was also involved in the crash but not significantly damaged by fire.

Multiple emergency responders were called to the scene, and the sheriff urged drivers to avoid the area if possible. At one point, maps showed the crash, which was about two miles west of the Columbia Avenue exit, causing congestion that stretched back to exit 85 to State Highway 202.

Maps also showed slowdowns on the westbound side of the interstate not long after the crash occurred. Traffic cameras now show vehicles moving smoothly through the area.
