Crash on Trenholm Road injures police officer in Forest Acres

The officer's injuries aren't believed to be life-threatening, and the other driver was not seriously injured.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Forest Acres police officer is recovering after a crash involving another vehicle on Sunday afternoon.

The department said the crash happened just before 1 p.m. Police said a Forest Acres patrol vehicle was involved in a collision with a white Volvo SUV in the area of Trenholm Road and Lakeview Circle. The department said Columbia-Richland Fire arrived soon after and extracted the officer from the vehicle. Police said the officer was conscious and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

The other driver remained at the scene, was not seriously injured and didn't need to be taken to the hospital. The department hasn't elaborated on how the crash occurred, but Police Chief Don Robinson provided an update on the officer's condition in a statement released Sunday afternoon.

"I have been at the hospital to see our officer, and I am thankful to report his injuries are not life-threatening," Robinson said. "We will do what we can to support him as he recovers."

Robinson also thanked the fire department for its fast response and for getting the officer out of the vehicle.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol will be investigating the crash further.
