Head-on crash on I-77 leaves 4 dead in South Carolina

Officials thanked a truck driver who stopped to help and attempted to put out a fire at the wreck with his own extinguisher even before fire crews arrived.

CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities are investigating an I-77 crash that left four people dead early Sunday morning in South Carolina.

According to Master Trooper Gary Miller with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 3:10 a.m. on the southbound side near mile marker 69 - which is just north of the Richburg interstate rest area.

Miller said there were two vehicles involved, a 2012 Honda Civic and a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Investigators believe the northbound Chevrolet crossed into the southbound lanes striking the Honda head-on.

The driver and two passengers in the Honda and the driver of the Chevrolet were all killed in the crash. One passenger in the Honda survived.

Richburg Fire-Rescue, which responded to the accident, reported a possible third vehicle involved but also reported four deaths in the crash. The department thanked neighboring departments for assisting in the response and helping manage traffic as the southbound lanes remained closed for roughly seven hours.

The agency said a truck driver also stopped to help and attempted to put out a fire at the wreck with his own extinguisher even before fire crews arrived.

"Your attempts to assist and your amazing compassion did not go unrecognized," Richburg Fire-Rescue said in a Facebook update later Sunday.

The Chester County Coroner's Office has not yet released the names of the victims in the crash.
