I-26 crash leaves one driver dead, two others hurt; SCHP investigating

Authorities say two vehicles had stopped due to another crash when a third vehicle hit one of them, pushing it into the other.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities say one driver is dead, and two others were hurt in a crash on I-26 early Friday morning.

Master Trooper William Bennett with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 7:10 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near mile marker 95, between the exits for Columbia Avenue and Broad River Road.

Trooper Bennett said a 2017 Nissan Murano, a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox, and a 2016 Dodge Ram were all heading east on the interstate when the Nissan and Chevrolet stopped due to a previous collision. Bennett said the Dodge struck the back of the Chevrolet, pushing it into the Nissan.

Authorities said all three drivers were taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet died. The Richland County Coroner's Office hasn't yet released the name of the deceased victim.

Trooper Bennett said the South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.
