COLUMBIA, S.C. — Authorities are providing new information about a deadly crash on I-20 that caused a considerable backup on Saturday afternoon.
According to Corporal Tyler Tidwell with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened just before 6 p.m. on westbound I-20 near the Broad River Road exit.
Preliminary details from the agency suggest a 2006 Toyota 4Runner that traveled out of the interstate lanes to the left and hit a concrete divider before overturning.
The driver, who has not yet been publicly identified, died at the scene according to Tidwell. No details about what may have led up to the crash were released.
Investigators and first responders temporarily blocked all westbound lanes of the interstate at Broad River Road, causing traffic backups two-thirds of the way to Monticello Road with additional congestion appearing on Broad River Road where several people were attempting to enter or exit the heavily-traveled street.
Crews reopened the road around 8 p.m., Saturday.
