COLUMBIA, S.C. — We’ve made it to the beginning of another month which means it's time to take a look at the night sky over the Midlands. We first want to highlight some of our April photos from some of our Nighttime Weather Watchers.
The moon was a sight to see last month and it will be again in the month of May. Later this week, the Full Moon known as the Flower Moon for the colorful Spring flowers we get this time of the year, will be visible in our night sky. It should rise over the eastern horizon right around sunset.
A lot of what will be visible this month will be in the mornings and that includes the Moon visiting the constellation of Sagittarius on the morning of the 9th. This constellation contains a very identifiable group of stars that make the shape of a teapot giving it its fun nickname. The moon will be right next to this feature.
On the morning of May 13th the Moon and Saturn will present in the easterly sky around 3 to 5 am.
My pick for the best view of the month is when Venus, the Moon, and the constellation Gemini will be visible in our western evening sky. The two main stars Pollux and Castor are named for the twins that the constellation forms.
If you are hoping to take a look at the stars this week, the weather is looking absolutely perfect with plenty of clear skies and cool nights.
