RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — New details from the Richland County Sheriff's Department describe how two women nearly escaped a local jail on Wednesday.
According to newly released details, the sheriff's department said 22-year-old Alyssa Putnam and 41-year-old Tayrean Brechbill utilized a trashcan in an attempt to get out of jail. The sheriff's department said the two used the can to help them climb through a hole in the ceiling. Authorities said other inmates have used a similar method in the last year.
The sheriff's department's update reiterated previous reports that the two attempted to steal a vehicle and leave the premises but were unsuccessful. While the incident occurred on Wednesday, the sheriff's department said it wasn't contacted until Saturday.
Previous reports suggest Putnam was in jail on a shoplifting charge, and Brechbill was being held by Broward County, Florida, on unspecified charges. Putnam now faces additional charges of escape, motor vehicle theft and tampering with a vehicle. Brechbill faces charges of escape, tampering with a vehicle and larceny.
