Vape contraband leads to arrest of two DJJ corrections officers

Authorities said one was taking money in exchange for vape devices, and another was bringing the devices home to charge them, then returning them to detainees.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Two juvenile justice corrections officers have been arrested and charged for allegedly providing contraband to detainees.

The South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) announced that 33-year-old Lottie Cash and 36-year-old Ebonie Howard were charged with misconduct in office and furnishing contraband to a juvenile in the custody of the DJJ at the Broad River Road Complex.

Warrants state Cash hid contraband, including vaping devices, brought them past security on multiple occasions and provided the items to DJJ detainees in exchange for money. Warrants for Howard's arrest state she received vaping devices from detainees and took them home to charge before hiding the devices on herself or her property to get them back to the juveniles in the facility.

Authorities said Cash turned herself in at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on Wednesday morning, and Howard did the same on Thursday morning.
