Second arrest made in disappearance of woman now presumed murdered

Investigators have yet to say how Bryan Alexander Hampton Jr. is tied to the case. He was the second person arrested in the investigation.

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. — Months after her disappearance, the body of a woman who went missing in South Carolina has yet to be found. But, on Friday, investigators announced a second arrest in her presumed murder.

Authorities said on Friday that 35-year-old Bryan Alexander Hampton Jr. surrendered to Aiken County investigators on a charge of accessory after the fact of murder in the death of Jamilla "Millie" Shanae' Smith. Authorities initially alerted the public to their search for Hampton on Wednesday.

Investigators have yet to say how Hampton is tied to the case. He was the second person arrested in the investigation.

Smith's mother reported her missing on Dec. 3, 2023. The sheriff's office arrested 34-year-old Daniel Gabriel Harmon initially for second-degree domestic violence. Authorities said 911 calls from Dec. 2 and evidence found in the trunk of the car Harmon was driving led to charges of kidnapping and murder on Dec. 23.

In an emergency call, Smith told dispatchers that Harmon had broken into her home and was chasing her with his vehicle. A warranted search of that vehicle uncovered blood.
