Man calls police, admits to shooting his wife to death, Sumter deputies say

Fred Samuel Falls claimed he shot his wife the night before calling police.

SUMTER, S.C. — A Sumter woman is dead and a local man was arrested for murder after he called law enforcement and admitted to shooting his wife the night before, according to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.

Sumter County Dispatch received a call Sunday morning, May 26, 2024, at 6:28 am from 61-year-old Fred Samuel Falls, claiming he shot his wife the night before. He asked that deputies respond without sirens.

Dispatch notified deputies and EMS, who responded to the location. The first deputy to arrive found Falls sitting on his porch and held Falls at gunpoint. The suspect was detained by additional deputies when they arrived.

Once inside the home, investigators found the victim lying motionless on the floor with a fatal gunshot wound.

Investigators began collecting evidence, including two firearms. To determine if one of the two firearms were used as the murder weapon, crime scene Investigators are examining them and other evidence, including a spent shell casing.

Falls is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Deputies say Falls does not have a criminal history and a motive has yet to be determined.
