AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. — The Aiken County coroner and other agencies still have unanswered questions after crews recovered a body from a burning home.

Coroner Darryl Ables said the fire happened around 7:15 p.m. on Friday at a home in the 500 block of John Nunn Highway near Salley. He said law enforcement and fire personnel responded to the home and extinguished the fire. Afterward, crews found a male body inside the house.

"Due to extensive thermal injuries, the victim was not immediately identified and will be autopsied in Newberry to determine the cause of death and to assist with positive identification," Ables said.

While the coroner works to determine who died and how that death occurred, other agencies, including the Aiken County Sheriff's Office, are investigating how the fire happened.
