NORTH, S.C. — On Tuesday, Council Member Jeff Washington won the election for mayor in the Town of North.
Washington beat his opponent, Wanda Whetstone, 56 to 24.
Washington says when he is sworn in he plans to attract business to the area.
"'I want this place to grow,” Washington said. “This was a great town, a lot of business, business up there on the Main Street. We need business to start coming back in."
Washington says he also plans to tackle the expansion of city limits during his time as mayor.
"It will bring some revenue to the town,” said Washington. “But really I just want people to come out and cast their votes. A lot of them were turned down yesterday, and I don't think that’s right."
Cecil Knotts has owned KPC Ice Cream Parlor in North for over ten years. He lives just outside of city limits and would like to see his neighborhood included in the town.
"North needs a lot of things,” said Knotts. “And maybe by expanding the city limits there's something that the folks on the outside of limits can't get on the outside of the city limits."
Knotts also said he hopes he will be able to vote in the next election, that is if his residence joins city limits.
"I'm outside the city limits and the mayor election, I can't vote,” said Knotts. ”Maybe by expanding the city limits, that would allow me to vote and I would have a say so in our mayor and who we get for mayor."
Councilman Jeff Washington will be sworn in as the Town of North's new mayor at North Town Hall on Monday evening.
