Fire damages home in Sumter on Sunday night; one person confirmed dead

About 18 firefighters responded to the home, and it took roughly 45 minutes to get the fire under control. There were no other people in the home.

SUMTER, S.C. — Authorities say firefighters discovered one person dead following a house fire in Sumter on Sunday evening.

Sumter Fire said the initial call came in around 7:30 p.m., and roughly a third of the home was burning when crews arrived. Approximately 18 firefighters responded to the call and had the fire under control in about 45 minutes.

Authorities said there was only one occupant of the home, and that person is deceased. Police emergency medical services personnel and investigators also responded to the scene.

The Sumter County Coroner's Office hasn't yet released the name of the deceased.
