Elgin-area man identified as victim killed in early morning Kershaw County crash

The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have released the name of an Elgin-area man who died in a crash early Sunday morning in Kershaw County.

Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday on Veterans Row near Chestnut Road. Based on preliminary details, Ridgeway said that a 2014 Toyota pickup truck was traveling north on Veterans Row when the vehicle traveled off the left side of the road and hit a guard rail.

The crash left the driver, identified by Coroner David West as 41-year-old Nicholas Nathaniel Baker, dead at the scene. West said the victim's cell phone alerted authorities to the incident using a "crash detection" feature. West said the victim wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.
