COLUMBIA, S.C. — The University of South Carolina Police Department warned the campus community to remain vigilant following an alleged sexual assault on Saturday that happened nearby.
The department said it was assisting the Columbia Police Department in investigating the incident, which happened on South Assembly Street between Rosewood Drive and Whaley Street around 4:30 p.m.
The department said that it learned that two males sexually assaulted a person after the victim accepted a ride from them following an event. The victim told police the suspects were offering shuttle services in a black golf cart.
Investigators are now looking for the suspects in the case. Police believe one wore a black t-shirt with a Carolina logo, and the other wore a Chicago Bears jersey.
Authorities urge anyone with information about the case to contact Columbia Police or campus police. Tipsters can also provide tips through the RAVE Guardian Safety App or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC or CrimeSC.com.
Campus police urged the community to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings and report suspicious activity to law enforcement. The department also encouraged people to avoid taking unsanctioned transportation and use caution when riding with people they don't know.
Police said it's important for people to trust their instincts, get to a safe place if something feels amiss, and, in the event of a crime, note details such as a person's appearance and clothing.
People are also told to establish boundaries and be assertive in situations that seem unsafe. Finally, police said traveling in groups can help increase individual safety.
