Sumter police continue to investigate fatal shooting at Broad street hotel

The incident took place at the Sleep Inn on Broad Street, where 20-year-old Saquan Logan and 19-year-old Demari Spann were fatally shot.

SUMTER, S.C. — Sumter police are still searching for those responsible for a shooting that left two young men dead at a hotel early Sunday morning.

The incident took place at the Sleep Inn on Broad Street, where 20-year-old Saquan Logan and 19-year-old Demari Spann were fatally shot. Police responded to the scene around 4:30 a.m. after reports of gunfire.

A guest at the hotel, who identified himself only as Tyrone, described the chaotic scene he witnessed. "I don't know what time it exactly was, but we heard… pop… pop… pop… pop," he said. "I came downstairs, and they have all this taped off, so I'm wondering what happened. I went outside and looked around the side of the building and saw two people over there, two bodies."

Since releasing the victims' identities, Sumter police have not provided any new information on the investigation. However, the hotel shows signs of the violence that took place, with bullet holes and broken windows visible on the building.

Tyrone expressed his disbelief at the event. "I did not expect it out here. Especially at a hotel, yeah, it shocked me," he said.

A family member of one of the victims, Saquan Logan, spoke to News19 about the profound loss. "Saquan, he wasn't a troublemaker," they said.

The family is now grieving from a double tragedy, as Logan's brother was also a victim of gun violence less than a year ago. "He really missed his brother. His brother passed away not even a year ago. Same little town of Sumter," the family member shared.

No arrests have been made at this time. The Sumter Police Department is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information can leave a tip anonymously by calling Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
