Because he was 16 at the time of the shooting, the teen is charged as juvenile.

SUMTER, S.C. — Police say they have charged a third person in connection to a fatal shooting on Memorial Day in Sumter.

The teen, who was wanted in connection with the shooting death of 32-year-old Tavares Keiwaun McFadden and the injury of his passenger, was arrested following a brief chase after he was spotted by officers on Monday.

The teen is the third person charged in the May 27 shooting. He is charged with murder and attempted murder.

Because he was 16 at the time of the shooting, the teen is charged as juvenile. The Sumter Police Department, however, has asked that he be charged as an adult. That decision will be made in Family Court.

Two other suspects were placed in custody earlier in the investigation and each charged with murder and attempted murder.

Curtis Jefferson, 19, of Mayesville, was placed in custody May 29. Fernando Quintez Adams, 20, of Sumter, was taken into custody June 10. Both remain in the county detention center.

According to the police report, officers responded to a "shots fired" call at around 7:30 a.m. Monday, May 27, 2024 at the intersection of Green Swamp Road and South Guignard Drive and found a crashed car.

The driver, Tavares Keiwaun McFadden, was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, who also suffered a gunshot wound, was taken to the local hospital for treatment.

Police say that McFadden's car was stopped at the traffic light on Green Swamp Road when a white sedan drove up and shot into the car before it sped away on South Guignard Drive.
