COLUMBIA, S.C. — Beginning on Sunday, the old Broad River Road bridge over I-20 will start coming down - which means some overnight traffic changes for drivers.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) recently announced that it will begin demolition of the old bridge over I-20 at Exit 65 on June 2. During that time, traffic will be directed onto the off-ramp to Broad River Road at the exit, through the intersection and back down the onramp to I-20.

Westbound I-20 traffic will be routed through the detour on Sunday through Tuesday from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly. Eastbound traffic will be routed through the detour from June 9 through June 11 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The SCDOT said message boards and construction signs will be in place, and law enforcement will be present at the interchange to help with traffic.

"This temporary detour is necessary for demolition of the old bridge on Broad River Road, which will allow for construction of a second new bridge on Broad River Road bridge over I-20 for drivers use when traveling north toward Irmo," the agency said in a statement. "These construction activities are part of the Carolina Crossroads Project in Richland and Lexington counties."

The agency added that drivers should plan ahead if driving during these times and plan for possible delays.

Broad River Road traffic had already been shifted to a newly built bridge a couple of weeks before the demolition was set to begin.
