Driver identified after fatal I-20 crash, ran out of gas

Authorities said the driver got out of the vehicle and was hit by the tractor-trailer.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have identified a man who ran out of gas on I-20 and was hit by a tractor-trailer early Saturday morning.

Master Trooper Gary Miller with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 5:20 a.m. near mile marker 79, about a mile from Clemson Road. Miller said a 2014 GMC Sierra was stopped on I-20 eastbound in the roadway after running out of gas. Miller said the driver exited the vehicle, at which time a 2019 Freightliner tractor-trailer hit him and their truck.

On Sunday, the Richland County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 38-year-old Christopher D. Hagan of Lancaster.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.
